New carpet or lounges are a valuable investment, an investment in looks, comfort and lifestyle. There are a number of simple things that you can do to help you keep your furnishings looking good for years to come.

There are three basic groups of soiling; dry, watery, and oily soils. These are often found in combinations, such as in sweat or coffee. A lot of soiling can be airborne. Water will evaporate and dry soil can be vacuumed, but when dust sticks to a buildup of oily soils, your decor starts to look dull. It is then time for some professional cleaning.

Firstly, read the manufacturers care instructions. They may tell you if there are any specific requirements for the care of your furnishings. Remember that they are a guide only, and due to limited space, can often give you limited information. If you are in doubt about what to do about a particular problem, seek professional help.

In the meantime you can follow these helpful hints:

1.  Vacuum regularly to minimize build up of soils.

2.  Try to remove spots as soon as they happen. (The handy spot removal guide in "Quick Tips" may help you)

3.  Be aware of sharp objects on furniture. Things like shoe buckles and pets claws can pull threads or scratch or cut upholstery.

4.  If possible, rotate the cushions on your lounge and rearrange the furniture occasionally, to share the ware.

5.  Have your furnishings professionally cleaned on a regular basis to keep it looking good and feeling great.
